TOTAL WATER CARE

Water Total Care helps entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector with the setting up, maintaining and monitoring the water for your animals. This way you can be sure that your cattle always has sufficient, clean, healthy and reliable drinking water. To achieve this, Total Water Care goes through the following four steps: distribution, purification, dosing and monitoring. Optimally setting up your total drinking water system depends on all kinds of factors, there is no standard solution for every company. Therefore, we see a step that water systems are suitable for your business.

See below for each step which installations we can install.

Water systems

Distribution

Provide sufficient drinking water

Various water installations can be used to distribute water. Depending on the type of source, we give you advice about all the necessary equipment for transporting water from A to B, i.e. from the source to the animal.

What all should I think about?

The water source

Which water is used on a farm largely determines the initial quality and what the rest of the water supply will look like. The choice of the right water source depends on the location, availability, volume and cost. In the livestock sector, well water is often used, but the reuse of rainwater is also in full development. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each water source?

  • Tap water

Tap water is generally a very reliable source of drinking water. The water is purified by the water utility company and its quality is checked regularly and extensively. However, frequently a relatively large water connection has to be requested and you are not always assured of sufficient pressure. All in all, tap water is a relatively expensive option for professional livestock farmers.

  • Well water

Building your own well for pumping up groundwater means that water is always available. Depending on the depth and location of the well, the quality of water can vary greatly. Therefore it is necessary to purify the water after pumping. Usually this consists in the removal of excess minerals such as iron, manganese or lime. Floating dirt can also be filtered out, for example. We recommend a deeper well with a large diameter. A shallow well often has worse and highly variable water quality. If the diameter is too small, there is a risk for pumping up sand. In both cases, more extensive wastewater treatment will be required. The advantage of having your own well is that you can easily adjust the capacity and the required pressure to your specific business situation. In addition, well water is almost always the best option in terms of cost. In fact, it allows you to save several thousands of euros per year compared to tap water.

  • Rainwater/Precipitation

Rainwater is naturally clean. The water quality is mainly determined by the way in which it is collected and stored. In the livestock sector, rainwater is often collected via the roof surface and stored in concrete bunkers in the ground. This way, however, a lot of dirt can come along in the water, such as leaves, dust and bird droppings. It is therefore important to filter the water before it is stored. The filtered rainwater is stored in a citerne or bunker. As soon as the water is pumped up, it goes through a filter system and it can be disinfected by means of UV light.

Pumping

The water is brought from the well to the animal by means of a pump. The type of pump depends on the current situation, the desired well and your personal wishes. For the correct selection of a pump, the pump needs to be looked at only for 10%. 90% of the pump type is determined by the environment in which it is placed. It is estimated that around 70% of the pumps are selected incorrectly in practice. This can be due to an incorrect pump selection, but also to changes in your process or a modified production capacity due to renovation. An incorrect pump can result in increased maintenance costs, excessive energy consumption, unstable production and a shortened pump life.

The most common water pumps on agricultural farms are:

Underground pumps

Above ground pumps

Self-priming pumps

Centrifugal multi-step pumps

Pressure regulators

Finally, a pressure regulator is essential for keeping the pressure in your water supply system constant. It can be frequency controlled or on an on/off basis, both systems have advantages and disadvantages. Our advisors will be happy to help you find the ideal water system for your company.

Purification

Clean water for your animals

In this step, the quality of the water that comes in is paramount. We remove all undesirable substances from the water so that we have clean water. We start by assessing drinking water with our own senses. Are there any abnormalities in smell or colour, is it cloudy or are there any particles floating? Then we look at the chemical parameters (hardness, iron, manganese, ammonium, nitrate, sulphate, etc.) and the microbiological parameters (bacteria, viruses, yeasts or fungi). Based on these results, we can recommend a suitable treatment plant.

Total Water Care has a wide range of purification systems. Depending on the pollution in your water, we select a suitable treatment plant. We are happy to help you find the ideal solution for your business.

Curious about the available systems?

Odour / colour
Odour and colour is removed from water with aeration and degassing systems, activated carbon or ion exchange with scavenger resin.

Minerals
Superfluous minerals can be extracted from water by means of aeration and filtration systems, ion exchange, nanofiltration or an RO system.

Floating dirt
Floating dirt can be cleaned out of drinking water by means of filters. The most commonly used filter is the self-cleaning filter. Other options are bag filters and candle filters.

Microbial
Viruses and bacteria can be removed from water by means of ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, an RO system and UV light. Here, too, the ideal situation depends on your company, your wishes and the soiling combination in your water. We will be happy to help you find the right solution for your company.

Dosage

Keeping your animals healthy

After all undesired substances have been removed from the water, we will improve the composition so that the water actually becomes healthy. We do this by restoring the pH value of water, by adding food additives to compensate for any deficiencies and dosing cleaning agents and disinfectants to prevent biofilm formation.

A number of factors are taken into account when selecting an appropriate dosing system for your company:

Quantity / Dosage
It goes without saying that the amount of water determines the volume and the power of the dosing pump.

Product / Chemical resistance
When selecting a dosing pump, the chemical resistance of the pump must match the product to be dosed. Think of cleaning and disinfecting agents for water pipes.

Viscosity
Viscosity is also known as sticky, slow and thick fluidity of a liquid. It is the degree of viscosity, which is indicated in Pascal-Second (Pa’s) units. A dosing pump for adding a syrupy product should be able to handle a high mPa.

Gasification
When dosing products containing peroxide, for example, gas may be produced during dosing. In this case, an exhaust valve will be required to drain the gas. When dosing liquids into water, certain sources can release gas. Therefore this must be looked at in advance.

Monitoring

Guaranteeing the quality

A reliable water system is not only created by properly organising the water supply, but also by maintaining installations and monitoring the water quality. We keep an eye on the values of water by means of sensors and periodic inspections. This allows us to ensure that there is always sufficient, clean, healthy and reliable drinking water available for your livestock.

Reliable water, how can I guarantee it?

Automatic or periodic checks are carried out depending on the type of control. You can view all the checks 24/7 on a personal online page. If there are anomalies, you will immediately receive a report or we will send a technician.

Automatic / manual

Continuous measurement of water consumption

Continuous monitoring of the dosage per product

Continuous / periodic

Taking periodic water samples in a laboratory to ensure quality

Maintenance
The importance of optimal drinking water for livestock is great. There is a lot of investment in water quality and the consequences of soiling and infections are significant. The system must also be checked and maintained regularly, in order to guarantee the quality of water. This includes checking the filters up to the calibration of dosing pumps. Our service engineers take this entire process off your hands.
